Types of Archery Events

Target Archery This popular form of archery takes place on flat terrain and consists of shooting a given number of arrows, known as a 'round', at targets over known distances of up to 90 meters for men and 70 meters for women. Juniors have their own special shorter distances depending on age. Indoor archery, with its smaller target faces and closer distances, is very popular during the winter months.
This is the current Olympic form of the sport and the discipline in which Great Britain's Men won individual and team bronze medals at the Olympic Games in 1988 and 1992.

Field Archery Takes place on a course of targets set out in rough country (often woodland). The shooting distances are frequently unmarked so that archers have to rely on judgment and instinct. They may choose to shoot with or without sights or other aids, and with modern bows or the traditional longbow.

Clout Archery Similar to target, except that the archer attempts to drop arrows at long range (180 yards men and 140 yards women), into a series of circular scoring zones on the ground, surrounding a marker flag.

Flight Archery A form of archery that can only take place where considerable space is available, since archers compete by shooting for sheer distance.

Crossbow Archery The modern crossbow has developed over several hundred years into a highly sophisticated weapon. A few dedicated clubs cater for crossbow archery with its special target faces and rules of shooting.

Popinjay Archery Archers attempt to dislodge feathered plugs (birds) from perches on a 90-foot mast. This type of archery is most often found on the Continent.

Archery Darts and Golf Popular adaptations of archery based upon the familiar sports of darts and golf.
